KEELY & PIERCE BROSNAN: MALIBU'S ECO WARRIORS

Since the early days of Hollywood, Malibu has been a getaway and hideaway for movie stars, so it’s not surprising that A-lister Pierce Brosnan has chosen Malibu as his home.  The former 007 and his wife, Keely Shaye, can often be found in local restaurants and shops.  But whatever recognition the couple receives for their considerable glamour factor pales in comparison with what they do for the planet.

Pierce and Keely are dedicated volunteers to a number of causes such as marine mammal and wetland protection as well as anti-nuclear, clean air and clean water campaigns.  They led the fight against the Cabrillo Port Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility that was proposed off the coast of Malibu and Oxnard by BHP Billiton, believing that this project posed “significant and potentially irreversible negative impacts to the coast, the environment and to the health and safety of the community.” Pierce explain, “as a father and a concerned citizen and a resident of Malibu for 20-odd years, we are protesting this.”  Pierce and Keely’s efforts paid off when Governor Schwarzenegger rejected to LNG prposal, making the couple true local heroes.

In addition, the Brosnans joined with the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) to challenge the United States Navy's deployment of a new sonar system in over 75% of the world's oceans, citing scientific evidence that low-mid and high frequency sonar poses a grave threat to whales, dolphins, seals, and other marine mammals.  They have lobbied against legislation designed to weaken federal standards for labeling canned tuna "Dolphin Safe" and worked to stop a proposed salt factory from being built at Laguna San Ignacio on Mexico's Baja California peninsula.  The cople has been honored with numerous awards for their tireless dedication to the environment.

In addition, Pierce is an accomplished painter, often donating works to his favorite charities to raise funds.  But his most cherished paintings are the ones he created in honor of Keely.  The couple has two sons together, Dylan and Paris.
