A CHILD'S INDEPENDENCE

- JoAnna Ross Contributing Writer

I have been teaching children’s yoga for the past 4 years. When I was asked to write about independence I knew immediately what I would write about; a child’s independence.

I don’t have any children and I can only imagine what a parent goes through raising a child and then letting go. Here’s what I do know; I get to experience the children when parents “let go” and let them take my yoga class. At first I see the hesitance when I tell a parent, “We don’t allow parents in the room, this is our room.”  The look of fear sets in or the parents give me a list of reasons why they should be allowed in the room. Then I simply add, “you can look through the window and if I have any problems you will be right outside the door.” They take one last look at their two-and-a-half year old and say, “Mommy will be right outside the door, have fun!” I close the door and that child starts on his or her journey of growing up.

And the things that I see!! I see shy children start talking and making friends. I see
personalities form, imaginations expand, intelligence grow and whit, generosity, compassion and respect from all types of children. I see friendships form. If one child isn’t there for a week or if a child is having a hard time that day, these children are concerned. I see determination from a child when we are learning a new pose. I see that children are amazing. The one thing I don’t see is FEAR; it is nowhere to be found. How nice is that? No FEAR!  How do we get back to that in our lives?

So when you are ready and if it is available to you take your child to a yoga class. It is the perfect place to start that process that I am sure every parent hates of letting go. The good thing is now you know what happens on the other side of the door peek in……….
