LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS

- Liane Weintraub, Editor-in-Chief

One of the great things about traveling the country to spread our tasty message is that we get to meet so many amazing people. It’s truly inspiring to get to know new people who share our vision of the world.  Who are some of the most memorable characters we encounter? Dads, of course!

In honor of Father’s Day (Father’s Month, here at Tastybaby.com!), I want to send a shout-out to all the great guys who are committed to making their children’s lives as wonderful as can be.  Some do it with the seriousness of an elder statesman, and others with the silliness of the Marx brothers, but they’re all after the same thing – giving their kids the very best start in life.

You’ll indulge me, I know, if I begin with our own husbands.  (I mean, come on … it’s Father’s Day!)

Take, for example, my own husband, who is far from what you’d call the “domestic” sort.  But the guy can really step up when he’s called upon, and he is now committed to taking our son, Cole, to a weekly Mommy & Me music class scheduled smack in the middle of his workday, where he’s the only dad in a group of chattering moms.  (After class, the men in my life enjoy a smoothie at our local health food shop!)  Also, in an effort to indulge our daughter’s growing obsession with her hair (“yes, honey, you look exactly like Ariel”), Ava has somehow bamboozled Richard into blow-drying her hair on a nightly basis!

Then there’s my wonderful business partner’s sweet husband who was holding down the family
fort while Shannan and I were out of town on a work-related trip.  Not only did Eric take the kids out for breakfast over the weekend, but he even convinced their favorite diner to sell him some of their famous pancake batter so he could make Louisa’s and Sonny’s favorite short stacks at home while he was playing “Mr. Mom.”

But one of our very favorite fellows is one we’ve never even met (let alone married!), and he’s not even a dad yet, but his dedication to making sure his little sister gets everything she deserves is so impressive that I just have to include him here!  Jeff stopped by a demo we were having one afternoon in NYC, and although we didn’t get to meet that day, he sampled our Bango flavor & decided it was perfect for his little sis.

Now, that particular demo turned out to be quite a carnival for us.  We had just debuted at The Food Emporium, an amazing chain of upscale markets in Manhattan, and it seemed as though all of New York was going bonkers for Bangos.  We sold out of every package in the freezer, so the stocker refilled it … then we sold out again! With no Bangos left to sell, all the frazzled store manager could do was promise customers that he’d be re-ordering the following week.

While we, too, are big fans of our banana & mango flavor, we could never have predicted that

running out would cause such a stir … or such heated emotions!  In the frenzy of shoppers desperate to get heir hands on some Bangos, Jeff somehow wound up with one of the boxes we use for our display.  These “dummy boxes” are taped shut (our “real” product is sealed), they bear no expiration dates, have no shrink bands and, most importantly (or most unfortunately, in Jeff’s case), they contain no baby food whatsoever.  Instead of “live” product, our dummy boxes contain nothing but … sand!

Well, you can imagine Jeff’s surprise when he got home, excited to see if his baby sister would be as excited over Bangos as he was.  Poor guy didn’t know what to make of the grainy contents of the package, so he tried everything he could think of, from microwaving to leaving it out all night.  When the “product” never turned into anything remotely edible (and how could it?!), Jeff emailed us in a panic.  To this day, we have no clue how a customer wound up with a dummy box full of sand we got at the craft store.

But do not fret for our fearless friend – we sent over a nice care package to soothe his woes.  And because he had a great sense of humor about the whole thing, we knew he’d get a laugh out of the beach toys we included so he & baby sis could play with their sand!!

Happy Father’s Day to all you guys out there … whether you’re a dad or not, just stay tasty & keep us smiling!!!
